Research surveys for basalt rocks
Necessary rock studies of the gabbro and andesite basalt groups for the suitability as the raw material base for the production of continuous basalt fiber (CBF)
High-Quality Basalt Rock
The physical and chemical suitability of raw materials for basalt production are crucial for production of high-quality products with predefined properties.
Chemical analysis of rock samples (the content of oxides in the basalt) is not sufficient to conclude the suitability of raw materials for the production of continuous basalt fiber! This gives only an initial understanding of the prospects of the basalt deposit. This gives only an initial understanding of the prospects of the basalt deposit. So only further rock studies will confirm the suitability basalt rocks for the production of fiber.
Basalt deposits – the result of volcanic lava exits – is present in almost every country. The major basalt fields, whose suitability for CBF production has been confirmed in the lab, are located in Ukraine, Russia, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, China, India, Brazil and other countries. At the same time, out of the entire enormous basalt raw material base, only a small part has been examined for suitability for basalt fiber production.
The properties and the volume of raw material reserves is the key to the economic success of fiber and compsite production. The most advantageous option for creating a basalt fiber plant is to identify nearby basalt quarries with different rocks characteristics (acid-proof and alkali-proof) suitable for production of various kinds of basalt products.
Samples for the study are taken in the form of core drilling wells or pieces of rock of any shape. Sampling should be representative and fully reflect the deposits of raw materials. Selection of samples should be representative in nature and fully reflect the raw material deposits. Samples with a porphyritic basalt structure and amorphous form are recommended for production CBF. There are limit of oxides in the basalt.
Our technique of basalt rocks studies
To analyze basaltic rocks, the experts of LLC «Tesla Invests» have developed a unique technique, which is based on the combination of petrological studies and cutting-edge methods of phase analysis including laboratory melting and pilot-industrial melting at the high-tech equipment. This basalt rocks exploration define the following necessary rock melt parameters and the quality of the fibre obtained with the stated properties: chemical and mineralogical composition of rocks, melt homogenization temperature, dependence of viscosity of the composition on temperature, working temperature of the melt during CBF production, melt holding time, melt level during CBF production, die temperature, melt flow rate per die, pulling speed per fibre diameter, determination of fibre diameters, fibre thermal stability, fibre chemical resistance, and other characteristics of basalt rocks of gabbro and andesite basalt compositions.
The result of the studies allow to – with 100% accuracy – to confirm the suitability of rocks of basalt composition from the studied field (quarry) as raw materials for the production of continuous basalt fibers.
Basalt rocks exploration stages
All stages are carried out with the involvement of an expert group, which includes leading experts and scientists in their field as below:
The collection of rock samples at the quarry (field) is carried out by the specialists of LLC «Tesla Invests» (recommended). This will allow a visual method to exclude samples unsuitable for further research.
The method allows – with 70% accuracy – to determine the prospects of basalt rocks for further research on the suitability of the raw material for production of CBF. As a result of this stage, a report will be prepared based on a laboratory studies carried out on the basis of correlation of the chemical and mineralogical compositions in the matrix of specified parameters for CBF as below:
• Resarch materails;• Macro-description of rocks;• Chemical composition of rocks• Technological nature of melt;• Feasibility of rocks;• Glass receiving;• Viscosity and crystallization ability of melts;• Determination of wetting angle;• Study of fiberization conditions;• Physical-chemical features of fibers;• Conclusiaon;• List of reference materials.
The method allows to – with 90% accuracy – determine the suitability of this type of raw material for further production CBF and will reduce costs on complex engineering surveys of quarry. Using a collected samples, this method allows the customer to receive an analytical report on the feasibility of CBF manufacture as well as both parameters of the technological cycle and a set of recommendations on the preparation of raw materials.
Pilot Industrial Melting
The stage in the study of rocks is pilot-industrial melting of rock at the operating enterprise and the production of the resulting fiber of the finished product, such as rebar. This is the main source data for determining the optimal technological scheme and further development of design and estimate documentation for the construction of CBF production facilities.
The complex engineering surveys of the licensed area verifies the volume of basaltic rocks suitable for obtaining continuous basalt fibres by geophysical methods.
Demand for high quality raw materials for production of continuous basalt fiber (CBF) and CBF-based composites is constantly growing. Basalt quarry (and even undeveloped fields) can fetch tangible benefits to the owner if the rock samples are chemically proven to be suitable for production of basalt products.
